Tsumego problems have been found in Chinese books dating back to around the 13th century. This volume is the first in a three volume set, published inby tsumego author and 9-dan professional Maeda Nobuaki From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Tsumdgo players from Europe and US are often dan level in Japan.
To benefit from the books it is not necessary to be able to read these text parts. In any case there can be differences between the three types of rank for the same person. Please help to improve this article by introducing more precise citations. The books are lovely and although I don’t read any Japanese I haven’t had a problem with them – at least not caused by the language barrier. Shipping costs aside, I think that yen is quite reasonable, considering inflation and the original cost of the set.
The problems may be to live, kill or, occasionally, escape to the outside. I actually thought from maedx it on Amazon that the dark blue box WAS the book, and it turns out that it’s just a box! I think Maeda’s three tsumego books are in Japanese only, and I do not know where to buy them.

They range from situations that occur quite commonly, which every strong player ought to be familiar with, to deliberately difficult puzzles. If only part of the board is shown, as is usually the case, the rest of the board can be assumed to be empty. To find out more, including how to control cookies, see here: I would find it really helpful if anyone who has the book would mind taking a pic of a page or two so meada I can get an idea about how much Japanese is in the book as I can’t read itand maybe a problem from volume 1 and a problem from volume 2 or 3 so I can get an idea about difficulty level.
OC, there is a plethora of problems available to Asian players, as well.

Often, the solution to a problem is a ko. I’d never heard of the iroha ordering for the kana. I gather the Nihon Ki-in’s own regular 4-dan members are also pretty solid by our standards.

At the opposite extreme I’m not sure how much the famous old sandbagger syndrome of the Hiroshima 4-dan still applies – even pros tell of being sandbagged on the islands there – but I suspect the tradition lives on and can probably be found also in pockets such as Shizuoka or Sapporo.
