On their extensive travels across Europe, they are soon caught up in vastly different lifestyles. Dodsworth, having built his motor empire, retires with enough money to grant Fran, his wife, her wish to chuck everything and head to Europe indefinitely.
We are seeing the Baby Boomer generation starting to retire and also seeing divorce rates of people over 55 skyrocketing. Fran’s constant impatience with him, her zeal for their surroundings, her forced gaiety is fatiguing – both for Sam and the reader.
I won’t spoil the story because it’s not exactly what you think. The negatives about minority treatment in the USA haven’t been mentioned.
Now having read the book, I just marvel at the film more, and can’t say that I’m aware of any more efficient and elegant translation of novel to screenplay, nor of a cast who has more successfully captured the spirit of their literary alter egos, without being a bit restrained by the text—very few lines straight from Lewis appear in the film. Literature, rare sweet literature. Her vision for living “better” is a shallow one and I’m wondering if SL is pointing at American women in general.
Passing up advancement in his recently sold company, Dodsworth leaves for Europe dovsworth Fran, but her motivations to get to Europe become quickly known. To me a book about identity and just who do we dodwworth we are and how do you define yourself. As for Fran, you’ll have to read the book. dodsworrh
Poor Sam is heavily afflicted with codependency. Lewis’ fans in his own lifetime turned on him for this, but it’s time that we restore the respect and fame he deserves for being such an astute prognosticator; and with this copy of Dodsworth being auctioned at a deliberately low starting bid to encourage an actual sale, this is a fine choice for a collector who wishes to “beat the odds” before this re-lionization of Lewis takes place next decade.

I suppose America terrifies me. Sam wants to go back to the USA with her and start life anew. Are our shoulders not as broad? I will admit to liking the movie better, but perhaps only because I encountered it first.
