Queisser initially asked Felix Mendelssohn to write him a Trombone Concerto, but as he did not have the time for trimbone, David might have suggested Mendelssohn to use his composition for this purpose. David was Tromboje concertmaster of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig and also worked closely with that composer on his violin concerto, which led to David playing the first public performance of that Mendelssohn classic as soloist.
